When I heard all these stories about GPS navigation systems leading drivers astray into forests and large bodies of water, I often wondered if GPS is really making us lose our way. (See what I did there??)
Then I got a Garmin Edge 500 for my bike, and my faith in GPS was restored. It was super easy to set up and it provides a metric ton of information right at your fingertips. The GPS function made it a cinch to review and catalog my ride when I got home. So the Garmin was great, but I didn’t truly appreciate it until I joined Strava.
Now I’m hooked.
Strava is a social network website for cyclists and runners. It uses the GPS capabilities of devices like the Garmin Edge and Forerunner series to upload your rides and runs for your friends to view. That’s not what got me hooked though.
Strava also automatically records your performance over certain segments of your workout and compares your times to others that have been there. You can even create new segments if your favorite stretches of road haven’t already been marked.
I’m not a fiercely competitive person, but this feature added a whole new dimension to my riding. Now when I got out on a ride, I have a little extra motivation to dig a little deeper and go for the KOM ranking (King of the Mountain) on the next climb. Even if I don’t get the top time, its a great way to track how I’m progressing in my training. Uploading to Strava to see how I did is one of the first things I do when I get home from a ride, and its a great feeling for me when I see that I’ve shaved time off on my favorite segments.
Strava also allows you to create clubs for you and your friends to connect and compare. Since you’re all our friends, we did the hard work and created Club Cycle Craft on Strava! All you need is a free Strava account and a smartphone or GPS-enabled cycling computer (eg. Garmin Edge, Timex Cycle Trainer). Join here to connect with your fellow Cycle Craft riders and see where you stack up. Also, stay tuned for challenges and chances to win cool prizes!
Don’t have a GPS-enabled computer? Don’t worry! We’ve got a full selection of GPS computers from Garmin and Timex in stock now. Come in today and check ’em out!
